Sperm DNA Fragmentation Test

The DNA fragmentation test is a second-generation investigation that can measure the actual damage in individual sperm. It can help us to diagnose and treat couples previously faced with ‘Unexplained Infertility’.1 in 6 couples have trouble conceiving and as many as 25% of these continue to have trouble even when undergoing fertility treatment.

In some clinics, men are only offered a traditional semen analysis and should this show normal results, the couple will be diagnosed with ‘unexplained infertility’. Recent tests have shown that up to 80% of men with unexplained infertility have problems in their sperm DNA. Problems that can only be detected using the DNA fragmentation test. Influences such as stress, smoking, alcohol, recreational drugs, obesity and other avoidable lifestyle factors can affect sperm quality. Even healthy sperm have some DNA damage but it’s the amount of damage that matters.

What are the reasons for having the test?

As well as going a long way to diagnose Unexplained Infertility, Sperm DNA Damage has now also been linked to recurrent miscarriage. Having a detailed analysis of the sperm DNA damage means that we are better equipped to provide advice which can make a dramatic difference when developing a treatment plan. For example:

Sperm DNA Damage can quickly be improved by making simple lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol, smoking and drug use. Couples can be advised to start with ICSI treatment rather than IVF, saving valuable time and reducing the cost through unsuccessful treatments. The test can highlight a potential reason for recurrent miscarriages and then a fertility plan can be further optimised.
